I live in Hackney in London, and recently I noticed how the front gardens of homes in my neighbourhood would change at night. Trees and shrubs become mysterious and looming; illuminated from above by sodium yellow street lamps, or back-lit by a window in a building. I am intrigued by the relationship between people’s homes, their gardens and the street. Windows have also become important – as a light source and as a glimpse of an inner world. But I don’t want to reveal too much. Instead I want to let the darkness of night mask the clutter of the day.
