Amid the chaos of the world's worst outbreak of Ebola, Joseph lay unattended on a thin mattress showing many of the symptoms of the disease. The staff had long ago fled in fear of the virus. A victim of the fear, shock and confusion that dominated the latter half of 2014. Now, as the battle against Ebola seems finally to be having some success, grief and thousands of empty bedrooms – unclaimed for fear of the virus – are testament to the horror that unfolded here.
