For the past several years I have been exploring the commercial fishing industry, photographing the vessels and piers when they are abandoned. For this piece I made several photographs of the steel winches that are common to all of the boats. Fifteen images were selected, precisely cropped to form a perfect circle-within-a-square, and arranged in a grid. The final piece allows for an appreciation of not only the individual “portraits”, but also their common elements, their relationship to their neighbors in the grid, and the rhythm and flow that emerges when viewing the entire array.
