Inspired by the titular character in Gustave Flaubert's classic novel because the character is so polarizing; she is both self centered, materialistic and insensitive. What was intriguing is the question if that is inherently her character or is it due to lack of freedom she had as a woman at the time of the story. The only option for a woman at that time to rise in society was to marry, even if she were intelligent and ambitious, there was very little opportunity for a career. Ultimately the single most important decision (or opportunity) in a woman’s lifetime is who she would marry - and much of that was a result of chance, circumstance of birth, or whatever she could do to make herself as attractive as possible. Madame Bovary makes the wrong decision and suffers the consequence of wretched unhappiness. She desperately tries to improve her situation in the only ways she sees possible as her options are extremely limited.
