Lene Palfelt is one of the 4,800 Danish women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. In December 2013 the first warning signs appeared. After Lene stopped breastfeeding her youngest daughter Karla her right breast continued to be swollen. She was examined in a private clinic shortly thereafter. She lay with her breasts still exposed when the doctor matter-of-factly said: “the breast shows signs of cell changes. It looks like breast cancer.” Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer with women. One out of every nine Danish women develops the disease.
