Raised in a rural immigrant area of the country that once had many small towns and farmsteads, I watched the transformation of the area as many of these small towns and farmsteads were abandoned as the inhabitants migrated into larger towns and cities, leaving behind the dreams that had once guided their lives. My fascination with abandoned dreams has stayed with me throughout my life: Why was this place built? Who lived here? Why did they leave? I decided to explore this phenomenon in a contemporary setting, and was surprised to find that many of the feelings I had experienced as a child surfaced in this exploration.
