Ansuma from Gambia spent 11 days on a boat, Michael from Zimbabwe 31 days on a boat – with only bread and water. These were days of fear and desperation, spent wondering whether they would make it across the water alive, unsure of what the future would bring. For us they’re simply boat people. For us they have no names, and we don’t recognize their faces. LEAVING ANONYMITY BEHIND FOR MORE HUMANITY i saw a single photograph of a child, perhaps two years old, as old as my younger daughter, floating dead in the sea. Around that child float many more victims of Europe’s repressive immigration policy: so many dead people without names and faces, people we continue to speak of in the media only as refugees or boat people. This is exactly what i want to change: “I want to give these people a name and a face and thereby also give them avoice".
