The ANIMA/ANIMUS series have no digital special effects. This is Field Mirror Photography which I developed and began using in 1983. I design mirrors to yield specific effects and take them on location. This series was born from my 26 years of experience living among and photographing remote tribal people in Africa. The indigenous Efe spoke with me about the "Chatani" a nature spirit- both masculine and feminine- that brought all forms of life into being. Other tribes spoke about life erupting from the "breath," or "wind" blowing forms into being. This series gets its name from the latin, ANIMA meaning "breath, life, soul." The ANIMA/ANIMUS figures are taken in the Sahara Desert among the traditional Tuareg people whose ancient culture predates the Judeo-Christian era. The ANIMUS figures are taken among the painted Koro Warriors of the Omo Valley. The final framed photographs are 48" x 78" archival pigment prints.
