The first inhabitants of the Azores brought with them the Holy Spirit festivities, an ancient religious practice, whose rituals are still practiced in a more or less pure manner. Those rituals take very different forms in each of the islands. The greatest festival of the island of San Miguel occurs on the second weekend of July in Ponta Delgada. The festivity is organized by the City Hall. On the main day of celebration, on Sunday, a procession travels through the main streets of the city.
