This is a collection of photographs of abandoned industrial buildings, and structures in the South Wales area, whose original functions are unclear. They are artefacts now divorced from their original context and variously not significant, accessible or substantial enough to be accorded historical relevance by the discourse and institutions of Heritage. I want the photographs to encourage the viewer, not only to consider what their original uses might have been, but also to create imaginary provenances for them. The intention is to bestow new identities on these relics' continuing presence in the landscape, ones that allow for contemporary, associative meanings from the realms of art history and architecture, or the iconography of religion, for instance. They appear to be here to stay, so why not elevate these relics into objects of aesthetic contemplation rather than confining them to a lonely, anonymous existence as traces of lost, historical truths?
