The last man living on the island of Kpogbor stands in front of a makeshift barrier he built to protect what remains of his house from the ocean. Situated on the Volta river estuary, Kpogbor is being rapidly swallowed by rising sea levels and erosion connected with climate change. The phenomenon affects the whole coast of West Africa, endangering the future of tens of millions of people in thirteen countries. As the Atlantic Ocean eats up to 36 metres of coastline per year, wiping away entire communities, erosion and sea level rise are now threatening some of the world's most booming cities as well as vital food supplies, biodiversity hotspots and UNESCO-protected historical sites. Far from being an isolated issue, it's the harbinger of what the whole world will experience if we will not be able to find a viable balance between progress, social inequality and environmental conservation.
