This image shows a beautiful ice sculpture - thousands of years old - in its final hours. Having broken off the glacier it floated down the lag, continually being resculpted, becoming ever smaller on its journey. It eventually finds its way to the sea only to be washed back onto the volcanic black-sand beach. Here it sits regal and proud in the glow of the winter sun; but soon it will be engulfed by the ocean to become one with it. The ocean will be evaporated by the warmth of the sun, blown by the force of the wind back into the mountains and deposited as snow at the head of the glacier once again - continuing get great cycle of life. Taken in Iceland in mid-winter in sub-zero conditions, I had to wade in and out of the icy waters to capture this magic moment - never to be repeated.
