Every day we hear of negative impacts of Mexican immigration into the United States. What we don’t hear is the positive contribution these immigrants provide our country. Through deep traditions based in faith and strong familial bonds, Mexicans are a very hard working community that celebrates its heritage while contributing to the American economy. It’s time we celebrate their culture and appreciate the contributions they provide.

Story

Building a wall. Deporting the undocumented. Arresting the criminals. These are words being shouted out in the political landscape about Mexican immigrants living in the United States. Mexicans are much more than the perception of illegal aliens who take our jobs and pay no taxes. Many have left grim conditions in Mexico hoping America will provide a better life. Most are extremely hardworking, loyal, family oriented, and anxious to become US citizens. Through their cultural traditions, these immigrants provide much to the American economy and community life. They pay taxes, buy homes, and give back. Through strong familial bonds, they take care of not only the children, but also elder generations.

My community hosts many of these families who, while starting new lives in California, still have ties to their small town homes in Mexico. Through their traditions, hard work, and familial bonds, they are a culture enriching America and will continue to do so for generations to come.
