The Torah is Judaism's most sacred text. A new Torah is "welcomed" into a community with a celebration called "Hachnasat Sefer Torah." Once the scribe, or sofer, who created the Torah, has written the names of members of the community on to the scrolls, the Torah is lifted for all to see, paraded through town and placed in the synagogue. I was honored when asked to photograph this ceremony. I wanted it to be clean and uncluttered, so I set the scribe against white seamless paper. The scribe, with his beard and blue eyes had an undeniable energy about him and he commanded the space with certainty. The fascination for me was how the people approached him, and what level of interaction transpired. So that is what I captured.
