Portrait of South Sudanese olympic athlete James Nyang Chiengjiek, 28, running the 800metres in the Rio Olympics. James is one of the 5 South Sudanese athletes who have made the first ever Olympic Refugee Team. The 5 train together under the guidance of Tegla Loroupe, a 43-year-old Kenyan who in her time was the world’s best marathoner, a world record holder and a winner of all the major marathons. Her South Sudanese athletes grew up amid horrific war, Loroupe has been integral to plucking them from refugee camps, where they showed promise. Laroupe has taken a chance on these youngsters, none of whom have ever competed before she stepped into their lives.
