“El Golpe del Río” (The Coup of the River), references the moment in which heavy rainfall creates an overflowing wave at the top of a stream, washing away everything in its path as it violently rushes down the current. This book explores the evidence and products resulted by the coup of Puerto Rico’s society and visual culture as the river that was taken over. The photographs explore inhabited spaces in the city of Ponce, analyzing their auras and semiotics, as evident texts of today’s Puerto Rican society. “El Golpe del Río” ties together the omnipresent issues of historical colonialism and forced displacement that Puerto Ricans have been suffering for hundreds of years, up to the very present crisis in the island.
