This bay should be frozen on the date this photograph was taken. From a kodiak, we spotted a bear stopped at an edge of a ledge of snow and ice. Because of the lack of ice on which to hunt for his primary food, Ringed Seals, this bear seemed confused as to how to proceed. Eventually he got into the water and swam without hesitation toward our zodiac just offshore from him. It is at precisely these moments when two-cycle technology chooses to test one's metal by not starting. As we pulled the starter several times one could not help but contemplate whether it would be the popped zodiac, the frigid water, or the hungry carnivore which would be the ultimate test of our day. The 2-cycle started, and we were on our way back to the ship, happy to see the bear, but with a sense of doom for him.
