Portraits of Survivors of Genocide in Khojaly city of Azerbaijan

Story

The Khojaly Genocide is one of the most tragic events in the history that took place during Armenia – Azerbaijan Nagorni Karabagh conflict in 1992. As a result Khojaly town was destroyed by being set on fire. 613 people of peaceful population fell martyrs, 487 people got handicapped, 1275 people, among them elderly, children and women were taken captive and were suverely tortured. The fate of 150 of them is still unknown. These portraits were made in January of 2017 in Azerbaijan cities Goranboy and Baku where Khojaly survivors currently reside. The same background is used on purpose not to disturb from the person portrayed. Viewers’ attention is on hands and eyes. The aim of the series is to portray people united by the same grief. They have gone through the same difficulties and survived not only physically but mentally and continued their lives with their families and friends. The idea was to show their strength rather than sorrow.
