From the moment I wake up, I begin my day with chemicals. I shampoo and condition my hair in the shower, I dry myself with a towel washed in detergent, and moisturize my face with lotion. Even before I eat breakfast, I take vitamins (a chemical compound), and I clean the house using cleaning products. In order to create a fragrant room, I plug in an air freshener, and I sit on the sofa painting my nails with nail polish. I realized that I was exposed to over 20 different types of chemicals in one day.
I developed the idea for my work “Oxy Korea†through the death of a consumer who used a humidifier disinfectant created by Oxy Reckitt Benckiser Korea. Incidents like this one caused a lot of clamor in Korea for the last 5 years. Products that were created to eliminate harmful bacteria and claimed to be harmless to the human body caused the deaths of hundreds of people. Through these incidences, I learned that chemical cleaning products can be harmful, and that the products that I was using may not be safe as well.
