Flashback to November 2015, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won a sweeping majority in Myanmar’s general election, bringing hope to all Burmese around the world. In Malaysia, the number of Burmese refugees totaled to some 100,000. Majority of them are given a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, waiting to be resettled, mainly in Europe, Australia or The United States. The Burmese in Malaysia, like everywhere else, holds Aung San Suu Kyi with pride, admiration and hope, as some motherly figure for them. The ordinary Myanmar people here dream of making it back to their homeland after Aung San’s landslide victory. After one year, whether that dream turns into reality or not, they still hold dearly to Aung San Suu Kyi in their hearts.
