For the past three years, Somalia has been languishing in a severe drought, which, when combined by internal conflict and restricted rural access, quickly leads to crisis conditions. There are already worrying similarities to the situation in 2011, when 260,000 died in the famine. In the worst affected areas, chiefly rural communities, crops have been wiped out and livestock died, while communities are being forced to sell their assets, and borrow money and food to survive.

In early March 2017, the photographer traveled with humanitarian aid workers to some of the places most threatened by conflict, famine and climate change. The ongoing political standoff with Al Shabab militants continues to hamper reliable aid access and the lack of rain means a long hard road ahead for Somalia.
