The limestone in south central Indiana is the highest quality in the country, known for the consistent color and the lack of blemishes. It was selected for use in building the National Cathedral, Pentagon, Empire State Building, and over twenty-three state capitals. While quarrying seriously mars the earth, there is great pride in the limestone by both the communities and the workers, many of whom are third generation I have been photographing in the Indiana Limestone Company quarries for two summers seeking to capture the tension of beauty and destruction. The men (only men) are central to the story and so their cutting into the earth is featured in the photographs.
