I’ve known Alfred all his life and started making pictures of him 3 years ago when I found myself interested in Asperger’s syndrome and the autism spectrum. Alfred has lived with Asperger’s his whole life, and once told me that when he grows up, he wants to teach the world about his condition. So I asked Alfred if he’d like to help me make some pictures that could teach people, and he agreed. Each picture tells part of his complex, sensory sensitive story. The inability to cope with bright light or loud noise, the comfort he feels from the textures of animals or being immersed in his teddies, or the precautions he takes to avoid touching too many food items at once. Alfred’s family do everything in their power to find ways for Alfred to deal with his difficult world. Full series and collaborative video can be found at: www.amyromer.com/in-a-sense
