Between 1943 and 1945, under this beautiful forest in the Owl Mountains, 9,000-meter tunnels were excavated by the Nazis. A few dozen meters below the quietness of this silent forest, 13,000 prisoners worked until exhaustion and among them at least 5,000 finally died. The project, called Projekt Riese, never came to an end and today its very final purpose is still unknown.
