The earthquake of 7.8 in magnitude that struck Nepal in 2015 was the worst to hit the country in over 80 years. More than 9000 people were killed and over 450,000 were left homeless. Having no way to communicate with the outside world, Safalta and her family were left to survive on their own without shelter, food, or clean water. Recently, I returned to Nepal to try and understand what it was that made the Himalayan Nepalese, 85% of Nepal’s population, get back on their feet after such a disaster. I met Safalta in one of the affected villages. Apart from her obvious beauty, I was drawn to her fearless expression and hopeful eyes which to me, represented both a survival story, and faith for a safer future.
