The aphotic zone is the portion of an ocean where there is little or no light. The work 'Aphotic' examines issues of invisibility, passage, loss, identity and legacy in which ceramic life jackets are dissolved in water to symbolise the invisibility of people from Africa and the Middle East who have died or gone missing trying to cross the Mediterranean. The breaking up of the life jacket represents the failure of the EU to support those in need. The Amnesty International report, called - A perfect storm: The failure of European policies in the Central Mediterranean react-text: 240 , links the rising death toll in the Mediterranean of over 2,000 deaths since January, to failing E.U. policies. Whilst the death toll was decreased by increased rescue boat numbers the EU target of reducing boat departure numbers from Libya has been a failed strategy leading to a threefold increase in mortalities between 2015-2017
