Adam Smith posits in the “Wealth of Nations” that the British were ‘... a nation of shopkeepers’, and that phrase has since shaped part of the national identity. I suppose it is a subject that has particular current significance, with many town centres losing any individuality as multinational chains drive out local competition. This is directly connected to the current economic climate, where large-scale global brands are able to undercut small economies in regard to price. Nevertheless, there are still a number of small traditional businesses that have survived even with pressure from the larger businesses. Surprisingly, most of them are still in good shape and play a vital role in support of the local economy. Therefore, I decided to do a project to record this special business culture. Through audio recording the interview both facilitates the capturing of primary research and has the added benefit of allowing the project to contain sound.
