Without doubt one of the most evocative and fascinating locations for winter wildlife photography is Japan. Hokkaido, an island located at the north end of the country, is home to the red-crowned crane, once extremely rare. Situated high in the Japanese Alps, lies the valley of Jigokudani, home to the famous snow monkeys who bath in the hot springs. In the Lake Kussharoka I shot this whooper swan on the mostly frozen lake. Sika Deer is the only native deer of the Japanese archipelago, are mostly active from dusk to dawn, though especially in winter. Japan
