Fighting in Ukraine has been ongoing since mid-April 2014. The government in Kiev does not recognize the declared independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and pro-Russian militants refuse to cooperate with the pro-European leadership in Kiev. The violence between the pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian army has killed more than 5,000 people since April.
