The festival of Hola Mohalla, a 300-year-old tradition of Punjab in India, retains the character of fun and enjoyment of the festival of Holi (festival of colour). Stories and songs about the life, valour and wisdom of the ten Sikh gurus, are told and recited, with displays of traditional Sikh martial prowess. In 1700, Guru Gobind Singh held the first procession at Anandpur. He made Holla Mahalla an occasion for the Sikhs to show their Martial skills in mock battles. The Festivities begin with early morning prayers and the evenings are filled with a lot of anticipation and thrill. The Martial members of the Sikh community (Nihang Sikhs) display their physical strength through daring acts like sword fight display, archery and exercising on unsaddled speeding horses.
