This picture was shot in a rural area of Shaanxi province (China). A family invited me to shoot the funeral of a grandmother who had passed away. I was amazed by the way moments of intense grief and happiness alternated quickly: people would collapse in tears but the funeral also looked like a huge party, with a lot of food, alcohol, smoke and card games. It was actually these moments of family happiness that left the deeper impression on me. On this picture, just before putting the coffin into the grave, villagers have alcohol (the bottle is on the coffin) and a man throws cigarettes to his friend. I chose this pictures because it illustrates the idea of "Family of Man": even at a funeral, people can share a moment of brotherhood.
