The sprawling Boragaon Landfill in Guwahati, India has the largest year-round population of endangered Greater Adjutants in the world. Mostly ignored, the rarest storks on our planet are now classified as an EDGE species, meaning they're close to extinction. The landfill attracts a variety of scavenger species and encroaches upon Deepor Beel wetland resulting in pollution, habitat destruction and wildlife deaths through toxic seepage. Once covering 4,000ha, the wetland has shrunk to an alarming 500ha. As of 2016, the IUCN estimated only 800-1200 Greater Adjutants were left in existence.
