Bauxite residue (often called "red mud") is generated during the transformation of bauxite into alumina, the step preceding aluminum production. This residue is primarily composed of iron oxides, which give it its characteristic red color. Due to its alkalinity, this residue is considered waste material requiring rigorous management.
