Sūtradhāra comes from The Land Below the Wind, part of From Borneo to Indochina, a chapter of La Marche de l’humanité. Although photographed in Kuala Lumpur, the image belongs to a wider reflection on Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia & inherited identities. From Sanskrit, sūtradhāra means “holder of the thread”: the one who carries or directs the performance. At the edge of Dataran Merdeka, a form of intangible cultural heritage turns the city into a screen, where older epics, Islamic-inflected colonial architecture, national memory & the performance of public virtue appear together in light & shadow.
