Artist Statement I have always had a deep fascination for abstract expressionist paintings. The allure lies in the unique way each artist layers his or her canvas, colors choices, and psychological complexities. From these inspirations, I endeavor to create vibrant, expressive, and emotionally based photographic images that can be interpreted as paintings. The majority of my work is based on my nostalgic remembrance of places I have seen or visited. I enjoy pushing the camera’s boundaries by exploring the unique ways it captures images. In this particular body of work, I am not interested in using the camera to capture images in a traditional sense, but rather to re-capture the dramatic and theatrical aspects of my recollection. In order to recreate these remembered landscapes and architectural places in my studio, using lightbox as my canvas, I layer multimedia materials that build upon each other to portray a painterly image. Additionally, to keep this body of work as true to the painterly experience as possible, I choose to place the emphasis on in-camera capturing and use little to no digital manipulation.
