As global cities compete for attention, trying desperately to appear 'modern', they are increasingly employing big-name architects to give their cities an identity, a phenomenon known as the Guggenheim effect. This has lead to an increasing homogeneous urbanism, designed by an international class of designers at the expense of the cultural heritage architecture once represented.
