Hidden under the waves in Neskowin, where the Oregon coast meets the Pacific Ocean, lies an ancient forest. Known as the ‘Neskowin Ghost Forest’, these trees are the remnants of a Sitka spruce forest displaced into the tidal zone 2000 years ago by a violent earthquake. Rarely visible, these stumps were preserved by subsequent tsunami sands, which are now eroding back, serving as a reminder of the violence in nature, it’s beauty and ephemeral existence. Standing no more than a few feet tall, they easily succumb to the growing encroachment of the ocean’s waves. Even in the most ideal conditions, the smallest movement in the tide causes them to vanish from sight. In the early hours of the morning, before the sun began to rise over the tree line to the East, the Neskowin surf experiences a magnificent array of colors; the tones constantly evolving.
