I had been bed ridden for over ten years with a mystery illness that left me fighting for my life. I finally found a cure, which enabled me to visit close friends in Armenia. This self portrait was taken at the thirteenth century medieval Gerhard Monastery; a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I am sitting in the Avazan ‘first cave chamber,’ which was literally carved out of the mountain rock. As the timer in my camera counted down for this long exposure photograph, a lady walked into the frame of the shot (on her way to view the famous sacred spring), and her ghostly image was captured. This image holds an extreme amount of emotion for me. So far from home; so free from the tight cocoon of my confinement. I have emerged with a deeper sense of self, perspective, priorities and a greater grasp strangely, of love.
