A deer in the water of a small canal in Nara Park, a large park in the city of Nara, Japan. The area is home to nearly 1,200 freely roaming deers. According to Shinto principles, deers are believed to be messengers of the gods. They have become the symbol of the city of Nara and are widely regarded as a national treasure.
