The series focuses on the backstage of Peking Opera performances in China. I traveled to shows in Beijing and Shanghai to illustrate the unique depictions of beauty in one of the most well-known aspects of Chinese culture. The men cover their faces in thick powder, smudge light pink pigment around their eyes, and apply intense black eyeliner to get ready for show time. The women tie strings from in front of their ears to produce the illusion of a perfect oval-shaped face. In the dimly lit backstage spaces, extravagant makeup becomes routine.
