While travelling around La Gomera, Canary Islands, I wanted to capture stories which expressed the culture of the island. When this couple caught my eye, it struck me how the lady painting did not actually need her husband to hold the ladder. The ladder gave her the physical support she needed, but she still required the emotional support of her husband. After many years living together in a remote village, they had become totally integrated as a couple. The image strikes a contrast between the human forms and the strong geometric elements of the building and the ladder.
