In 1707 James Thornhill was commissioned to decorate the Hall of the Old Royal Naval College with a series of paintings that depict the triumph of the protestant monarchs from William & Mary through to George I. The epic painting scheme that results is a baroque masterpiece known as 'Britain's Sistine Chapel'. An award-winning restoration of the artwork was completed in 2019.
