In Senegal, 95 percent of the population adheres to Islam and most of them commit themselves to Sufism. The West African country is regarded as an anchor of stability, it has never experienced an attack in the age of international terror - in contrast to its neighbouring countries. This has much to do with the role of the Sufi brotherhoods. This photo story captures various aspects and examples that show how the Sufi Brotherhoods, with their liberal and tolerant interpretation of the Koran, unite Senegal's heterogeneous society and rely on cohesion rather than division to maintain their power.
