While studying at the Kyoto Seika University, I was shooting a CM for Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu, a Japanese exclusive brand. During a break I took this photo of these bamboos because I was fascinated by the basket-masked komusō monks or “priests of nothingness”. They use music to meditate and create a distinctive art form with their shakuhachi flutes made out of these bamboos. Bamboos are also very important to our entire species because they absorb high amounts of carbon dioxide and emit high levels of oxygen. I wanted to use photography to mediate and create a distinctive form of meditation.
