Cash-strapped Greece has leased to El-Dorado, a Canadian company, one of Europe’s largest goldfields in Northern Greece, with the goal to become #1 in gold exports in just four years. But locals and environmental groups are worried about the pollution coming from the mining activities and are trying to block the expansion. There have been fierce clashes between protesters and police. Amidst the forest of Skouries, where trees are being cut down in order to create an open minefield, police threw tear-gas and beat up protesters. El-Dorado is promising to create 1.500 new positions, but locals having seen the pollution caused by the more than 50 years of mining in their areas, don't want this investment.
